Week 1: Orangs in General

Hello everyone! Make sure to answer this week's poll. What is the difference between a monkey and an ape? The answer will be revealed at the end of the week.

This week, we are talking about general orangutan behavior. Any good conservationist will say that the first step in conserving an endangered species is to get to know everything you can about the animal.

So, to begin this week, let's talk about general behavior of these red apes.

Orangutans are the largest arboreal (tree dwelling) animal. They spen 97% of their lifetime without touching the ground. Every night they make a nest to sleep in. These nests can be anywhere from 80-100 feet above the ground.

They are mostly herbivores with the occasional invertibrate of small mammal. People actually just witness orangutans fishing and eating the fish they caught. This was a never before seen behavior!

In closing, orangutans are some of the most itelligent animals on earth. Some scientists even say they may be smarter that chimps. In my opinion, it isn't very accurate when we label an animal as the smartest. It isn't a true reflection on their intelligence. We define their intelligence with human intelligence. I think that intelligence can only be defined within the same species.

Next week we will begin to discuss what is endangering orangs. Please comment and feel free to ask any question about any primates (it doesn't have to be just about orangutans).
